Purchase and Hire trekking gears in Kolkata

Firstly, I must admit and state that it is quite hard to get trekking gears of your choice near to your location in Kolkata. There are not much stores which give you the best trekking gears in Kolkata. When I looked for a Rucksack I wanted to purchase, I didn’t get any store near to my location in Belgharia. I found no other way but to search on Google as this was best thing I could do. I asked my friends and acquaintances but they could hardly tell me more than two to three offline shops.

rucksacks
Rucksack – Your Trekking Partner

I tried my hands on the search engine to find the offline stores of trekking gears because I had in mind that I would not purchase the Rucksack online. I was scared and doubtful about the quality and I had no knowledge on the thing. I wanted to see it, judge it, understand it physically and then buy it. You don’t get these options when you buy a particular commodity online from any shopping portal. When I looked for the offline trekking gear stores in Kolkata, I found only a few blogs that have the list of some trekking gear stores. I didn’t even find a single website of a trekking gear store in Kolkata. I felt like what hell is this – one can easily find a trekker or a rock climber from Kolkata in the distant places of the gigantic Himalaya but we don’t have a store with a website that sales trekking gears in Kolkata.

I am listing some of the stores that sales trekking gears in Kolkata. You can also hire some of the gears. You can get Rucksacks, sleeping bags, mattresses, tents and other equipments for trekking.

Sleeping bag
Sleeping Bag – Gives You Warmth

From the above mentioned trekking gear stores in Kolkata, I would refer two out of them. UBAC and ALPINE has got much better products than others in the list. These two stores have wide variety of products and the store owners are too good to give you advice on trekking out of their own experiences.

Good points to be noted about these stores are:
1. Quality Products
2. Exchange offers
3. Get the gears on hire
4. Get to buy the gears
5. Price is less than other brands
6. Choose from a wide variety
7. Place order with your choice of needs (colour, accessories etc.)

My first buy – A Rucksack

After I found the list of the trekking gear stores in Kolkata, I started searching for the best one because I had to buy a Rucksack. I went to all of them but found UBAC and ALPINE to be the better than others and I finally settled for UBAC. I went to UBAC to buy a Rucksack for my journey to Sandakphu and I was very confused to choose the one for me. The guy who was there to attend me helped me a lot with lots of facts and info that helped me to come to a decision and choose the Rucksack for myself. I wanted a Rucksack of red and black colour combination but it was not there for that time. The attendant asked me to place an order and I did the same. I am waiting for the date when I would get my first trekking gear in hand. I am looking forward to my Rucksack and my trip to Sandakphu. I will surely update you on the place after I visit it.

Thanks for going through the post and I would highly appreciate if you contact me for more details, information and travel updates. Stay tuned to Traveldias.com and I hope you enjoy being on the site. Stay tuned to travel news and travel chit-chats.

Keep traveling and keep smiling. 

another mistake, you use my name mr . barun, but my phone no, is not correct. please correct the number, my number is 09231581177

  1. Hi Abhijit,

Thanks for the info. I have visited all the stores except Alpine and Cliffline. This to mention that Chakra Equipments has shifted to Behala from Shyambazar.

I was searching for a rucksack of 60L – 65 L with inner frame. The below is my findings.

UBAC – good make but not water resistant. I did not ask if they make any with water resistant material, but whatever was available was not water resistant as the store person told me. Price vary on size from Rs. 2700 – 3200

RIA – I like it. The material was PVC coated. Price around between 2500 – 3000 along with a very innovative water proof cover. Only the strap padding and back padding material was not so good. But over all good and affordable.

CHAKRA – It is the worst, the material is a little low grade than RIA but the make and stitchs are bound to give up within 3-4 treks, forget expedition. They also sell other brand products like wildkraft etc. The price is high compared to the quality and other products in the market.

IDRIS – The best quality make. double lining and robust built. But priced very high comapred to others. Starting from 4500 to 7000 odd.

My understanding is all these stores are best for pocket, when you order for a bulk. Crazy but true.

I have also seen the following –

American Touristor – Very good, water resistant material, good finishing but priced around Rs.5000

VIP – Good as a back pack but cannot be considered as a good rucksack. You can use it for general travelling. but padding is not good quality. Price Rs.2500 (discounted rate).

Wildcraft – Good material, good built, varities available, priced above Rs.5000

EMY – Good quality material, good built, varities available, NO COVER, Price Rs. 1700 only. I bought it. Trust me its really good and perfect for any trekking or expedition. I have got a special cover made by RIA for Rs.400.

The above is my opinion and findings. It may differ from any one.

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Abhishek,

Wow..! That’s a quite comprehensive info from your end.

I have bought my new rucksack from UBAC and it is water resistant. I visited a few offline stores but found UBAC the ultimate choice because the products were good and reasonable. As you said they didn’t have any ready made water resistant rucksack, so I ordered and ask them to make it the way I want. They even provided an extra pocket on the hip belt as I wanted and charged a few rupees extra.

Thanks for going through the post and hope you liked it. You can also go through my post on Rucksack here: http://www.traveldias.com/rucksack-backpack/

  4. Thanks bro…I was searching for a shop to buy a rucksack for my 1st trekking trip to Goechala. I searched for them a lot online but as you said I was uncomfortable on buying a product online which I don’t know very well. I wanted a proper shop with experienced trekkers/mountaineers guiding me to buy the best for my needs. Then I found ur blog, I will be visiting the listed shops AEAP and will definitely share my experience after I bought one.

    1. Hi Kamal,

I always knew I wouldn’t go for a rucksack online. I wanted to see that, judge that and then purchase. I bought it from UBAC at Sealdah and I must tell you that I am satisfied. I would suggest you to go for ALPINE or UBAC, these 2 stores are the best and they sell finest trekking gears & equipment in Kolkata. The owner of UBAC himself is a trekker and is a good guide. He sells guide books of trekking too. 2 of my friends have purchased rucksacks from ALPINE and their rucksacks are good too.

Share your experience with us and let us know how is your rucksack. BDW thanks for visiting TravelDias. Stay tuned for more updates.

      Regards,
      Abhijit

    1. Hi Tuhin,

You can try alpine 360degree. They have a good collection but the fact is none of the stores in Kolkata sells army print rucksack readily. You can call them and inquire if they can provide your requirement. Call Mr. Barundeb Bhattacharya @ +91-9231581177

In case you don’t get there, call up UBAC. Phone No: 033-23512628

When you call them tell them that I have referred you. Hope you would get some discount.

  5. Actually Ubac doesn’t have products ready. So if you are at a hurry, you will be disapointed. My budjet is within 4500 and looking for a robust, waterproof, >45L pack with double compartment , adjustable & padded shoulder & heap straps and pole/walking sticks storage pockets. It must also have provision for sleeping bags, matress etc.I want to use it for amateur to difficult treks within 8-10 days. Please suggest me . My tour is to start on 3 jan, 2013. In future , i am planning for roopkund & rupin pass trek. Please help me with your feedback

    1. Hi Soumya,

You can knock the door of Alpine 360 Degree. You will get the product there. I suggest you call the owner MR. Barun @09231581177
Let him know that I have provided the number. If the product is ready, you can buy it readily and hope you would get some discounts. The rucksack I bought a few months ago has got all the features you have mentioned. Mine one is a bit larger. Hope you will get it within budget.

    1. Hi Avik,

In Kolkata, You don’t find walking sticks in all stores. You can check Alpine360degree if they readily have or not. The sticks listed on ebay are really good ones. You can buy from them.

  6. Hi Abhi,
it is very nice and important topic. Price (!) and quality that matters to me, impressive yes which are referred here. What i plan after eye though, Over and above, next time i would go for a tailor-made sack in local area, what do you say? Let them take time to make my dream sack. Ha ha.

    1. Absolutely right..! You can always get the best rucksack if it is tailor-made in which your wants are best fitted in. Alpine360degree is good in tailor-made rucksacks in Kolkata.

  7. Yes Abhijit,
i will call them. One thing i expect to know roughly the litre wise price and how much the weight it has and choise based how much it differs. You may let us know (might it become some variable :acceptable) also. Sleeping bag and tent pocket if there, and i am going to take altogether, will it be profitable?

  8. I want to purchase a 4 men dome tent 4cross 4 poles.and water proof ground sheet.

  9. Hi, Where can I get travel accessories like Rucksacks, Sleeping bags etc on rent. Please help me with a few stores.

    1. Hi Gabriel,

You can get all trekking accessories on rent from the stores mentioned in my post. The best one to go with is Alpine360degree. Mr. Barundeb is the owner of the store and they provide all clean things. In other stores the rucksacks are never clean. The sacks and sleeping bags stink. Let him know that I have referred you, hope you will get best things.

  10. Hi,

I have not had a chance to call all these stores but the fact that your blog manages to enlist all the possible stores in Kolkata is such a big help!

Thanks a lot for this super helpful list.

I shall come back and tell you more about the crazy trek we are about to make 🙂

  11. Will a 50L rucksack suffice for Sandakphu-Phalut trek? Planning a few more longer treks in the future, keeping that in mind what volume should I go for? And does any if these stores offer discounts? Thanks in advance…:)

  12. hi abhijit,
let me congratulate u on coming up with this blog. its so helpful n interactive.
i explored alpine 360, near hind cinema n alpine, bondel gate n got my rucksack from the latter. mine is a 50l one but i doubt the material is waterproof.
the alpine360 sacks look trendier no doubt, but they do not have side pockets, which alpine has. and i thought it would be pointless to take a sack which is giving me less no.of compartments as i am a disorganised person primarily.
let me kno why u chose ubac over alpine. i have seen an old ubac sack. it was heavy n has no padding but undoubtedly v sturdy.

moreover, i want a rain-cover and i did not like alpine’s. so would like to kno where to buy that from.

    ok..now to a more imp.thing. shoes!
i am totally at a loss on this. i want to buy a proper pair for trekking and i saw a hitec vlite waterproof pair at alpine. but that was all. i would like to know where in calcutta i could explore a few options, if you know any.
just to mention, i don’t prefer woodlands.
    thanks.
and where’s your next trip? 🙂

  13. Thank you Abhijit for such an informative post.
Is there any such shop located in North Kolkata?
I stay at Dumdum. I need to buy / hire a rucksack within 2 days. So I am searching for a shop which is nearby. Can you pls guide me on that?

    1. Wish I could help you but I was stuck with other things and I just checked this comment. Please don’t mind and let me know if you need any information in future. Keep traveling and stay healthy.

  14. Hi Abhijit Da, thnx for enlisting the details of the stores in Kolkata….recently,I had been planning to buy a rucksack…ur initiative deserves appreciation..

    1. For shoes, there is a good store near Exide More just beside Haldiram. I don’t remember the name but they have good and wide variety of collection. You can check there.

  15. Very nice research indeed .. I need to know about light weight trekking water resistant shoes.. Online shopping I don’t trust.. Size diffs from order… So I need some stores where I can trial n buy.. It will be nice if u help me out

  16. Hi,
Thanks for updating the travelers with such good information. All I want to know is from where can I RENT trekking shoes in Kolkata ? To be specific I am looking for Quechua Forclaz 500 or 600 Hiking shoes. It is costing me a lot to buy a new one. I’ll be doing the Kedarkantha winter trek from the first day of January’2017. So it will be heavy snow out there and obviously I need a very good pair.
Kindly let me know how to decide on this issue. I am quite confused!

  17. I’m going dooars, Gorumara national park and staying there for 6-7 days . Can you suggest what type of bag i need as it is my first time outdoor travel. I’m going with my friends.
Rucksuck or backpack or something..plz suggest .and if possible plz share a pic of the bag. thanks in advance.

    1. You don’t need anything special on your Dooars trip. It is better if you buy a rucksack. It is a much better than any other luggage bag. It is very handy. You can buy it from Alpine 360 Degree.

  18. Hello all,

Saw a lot of discussion regarding water resistant sacks and covers. My opinion is, whatever water resistance of the fabric moves away with friction by the third use of the sack or cover. I would suggest buying a NeverWet fabrick waterproofing spray by Rust Oleum (you would get that on Amazon.in) and that would serve for waterproofing the sack, cover, windproof jacket, down jacket, and even hiking shoes (most of them are a mix of nubuck and GoreTex). Would serve at least 5 years for 1200 bucks, and you can have all of them waterproofed for. However, seams/stitches cannot be waterproofed if not seam-sealed. Rest, you can do the research yourself.

Also, there is a Decathlon store in Uluberia now, will get the address on net. They make better products than most of them mentioned above.

Also, I have seen NORTH FACE shoes at CLIFFLINE (David), and at heavy discount on MYNTRA.

For hardcore gears you can check out ADVENTURE AXIS (poles, zamberlan/millet/lafuma shoes, etc).

HI-TEC is now at a discount online.

    Hope this helps you.

  19. I am a fresher in this blog and trekking field also. Can you suggest me from where I can buy a good quality sleeping bag and what will be the approximate price

    1. You can buy it from Alpine 360 degree. Mr. Barundeb is the owner and a good friend of mine. Price of the rucksack depends on the size (liter). On average a good one will cost you between Rs 3,000-4,000.

  20. Hi Abhijit, I am an another Abhijit. Jokes apart, Yes your blog in this regard is very interesting and helpful too. Recently I bought a 35 lit. Rucksack from Alpine 360 degree @ 1900 and it is really a good product in affordable price in Kolkata. Besides, Barun da, the owner is a nice person to meet.
Now I have an another query. Where from I can get a light weight, waterproof affordable trekking shoe in Kolkata ? Please reply. Thanks again.

    . Regards, Abhijit Dutta.

  21. Hello
    Mr. Abhijit gupta,
can u please suggest me any place where i can get good quality sleeping bags at affordable prices?

    1. You can try Alpine 360 Degree. The owner is Mr. Barundeb. Let him know my name. I am sure you would get good price. Let me know if you want to speak to him. I can share his number with you. You can make a query and then visit his store if required.

  22. Hi Abhijit i will be doing my first trek in September this year, i was wondering where to buy the necessary gear for the trek. We are planning Goecha la hence i would require high altitude trekking gear.

    Could you please advise ?

  23. Excellent information. Thanks for putting this in one place. I know Alpine 360 deg for a long time. We rented sac from them many times. (But rented sac are not comfortable at all and worst quality, no matter where from you rent you got the same result). Some of us also buy sac from them.
Alpine 360 deg (Kadamtala, Howrah) and Alpine India (Bullyguange, Branch at Barisha) are the same. Alpine divided and form 2 different company. There sac and material is more of less same. Also they have same model number for most of the material till now.
I used sac from Alpine, IDRIS, Wildcraft and some other but in Kolkata best is IDRIS. I personally use there sac for 2-3 treak and I find it best quality and give most comfort.
But as you said, price is high compared to other sac builder.

  24. I want to rent a rucksack for 6 days, could anyone please suggest from where I can get it and approx rent for 50lt

    Regards

    1. You can rent any trekking gear including rucksack from Alpine 360 Degree or Ubac. I would suggest Alpine 360 Degree. If you need, I can connect you to the owner directly.

    1. Apologize that I couldn’t manage to reply earlier. I was busy with some stuff. I hope you understand that it is so difficult for me to check and respond to each query. I think it is better if we speak. Please call me on my mobile after 9 pm any day. I can surely help you with all details.

  25. Hello Sir,
Need some guidance. This is my 1st trek ever and I’m going on Kedarkanta winter trekking in mid jan. I already have backpack. But I am very short on warm clothings. I have no idea how cold ot would be during those timeings and what all should I carry. Can you please suggest something. And some good store to buy those things in kolkata? I searched online and all I could find was Decathlone Store Howra. But thats 2 hrs drive from south kolkata.
    Waiting for your reply.

  26. Dear, want to hear some words about Clifline (David). They also sells sac. Is their product quality good enough to buy. Ubac is fine, I visited the store recently. Also visit Clifline too. But confused which 1 is better for a 60 ltr sac. I have planned for Roopkund in last week of this month. Please suggest as early as possible.
    Thanks in advance.

  28. I will be going for Dzongri Goechala trek this October. Which is the best store to buy trekking pants, balacava, gloves, fleece etc.

    1. You can try Alipne 360.

By the way, all the best. Wish a great trek ahead. Please do not forget to share your experience with me. I would also like to see some of your photos.

  29. Alpine 360 has a store near Ballygunge, Cliffline in Jadavpur is closer to me . Which one is a better shop in terms of quality, price, variety, right advice, flexibility in terms of product replacement.
    Arijit

    1. It should cost you around Rs 2000 if you buy from Ubac or Alpine 360 degree. You also get it online but please make sure you check many times before you order. Quality of the rucksack should not be compromised
