Gangtok Tour Plan – Sikkim Trip

If you are planning to visit Gangtok city in Sikkim, you are actually planning a trip to one of the favorite and most visited hill stations in India. Gangtok being a small city located at an altitude of around 5,400 ft can easily compete with other hill stations across the globe in regard to scenic beauty all around. Gangtok is one of the cleanest cities you would come across. The Sikkim Govt. has well maintained the city and designed it beautifully to attract tourists from across the globe. The economy of Sikkim is mainly supported by tourism and that is why the government of Sikkim is very strict on serving the tourists the best way it can. The state of Sikkim is mainly dominated by Buddhist culture and you would come across people who are best in hospitality.

Gangtok is a popular destination among tourists heading to explore the beauty of Sikkim. There are many places of interest in Sikkim which can be visited via Gangtok. Gangtok being the capital city and the administrative headquarter of Sikkim it is a very busy city. There are several tourist destinations and places of interest in and around the city. There are many superb monasteries in and around the city with great heritage value. Rumtek Monastery and Enchey Monastery are the best ones and must visited places in Gangtok city.  One can go for a day trip to sightseeing the places of interest in Gangtok city. Some of the major tourist destinations in other parts of Sikkim are well connected with Gangtok.

How to reach Gangtok

Gangtok in hills is well connected with plains of Bengal. Gangtok can be reached by road from Siliguri/Bagdogra/NJP. There is helicopter service to from Bagdogra airport.

BY Bus: There is regular bus service to Gangtok from Siliguri terminus operated by SNT (Sikkim National Transport).

By Car: There are prepaid taxi booths outside NJP staion and Bagdogra airport. One can also avail shared jeeps from Siliguri taxi stand.

BY Air: One can avail the helicopter service available.

Gangtok via Silk Route From East Sikkim

Gangtok is also reachable via the famous old Silk route in east Sikkim. If you are visiting east Sikkim, I suggest you to make the journey along the Silk route. It is really worth making the journey. The scenic view all around is just amazing. One can directly visit Gangtok from Lingtam, Zuluk, Nathang Valley or Zuluk in east Sikkim. The route covers places of interest like Old and New Baba Mandir, Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass along with other must visit destinations in east Sikkim.

Gangtok is also linked from Pelling and Darjeeling in Bengal. There are regular taxi services from both places to Gangtok city.

Gangtok Hotels & Resorts – Staying in Gangtok

Most of the hotels in Gangtok are in and around MG Marg, the main market place. MG Marg is the heart of the city, always crowded with tourists from various parts of the globe. Local people also visit the place to spend some quality time there. One can stay in MG Marg area if he likes to be near the market place.

But, if you like to spend time in a place which is serene and tranquil in nature, I would suggest taking your hotel at Development Area. This place is located at 30 min walk from MG Marg but very less crowded and the scenic beauty there is much more visible than any hotel in MG Marg. Each time I visit Gangtok, I check in the same hotel at Development Area. I love being in the push back chair with a cup of coffee in hand and viewing the gigantic Mt.Kanchenjungha and surrounding hills from the hotel room or balcony. Taxis are readily available, if one doesn’t want to walk, he can avail the local taxis. A taxi takes Rs 30 for a drop to MG Marg and one taxi accommodates 4 persons at a time.

Gangtok Sightseeing & Places of Interest

When you are in Gangtok, you must sightseeing the places of interest in and around Gangtok city. The must visit places in Gangtok are:

  1. Rumtek Monastery
  2. Enchey Monastery
  3. Ranka Monastery
  4. Do-Drul Chorten

One can visit other tourist destinations too like:

  1. Ganesh Tok
  2. Honuman Tok
  3. Tashi View Point
  4. Botanical Garden
  5. Assembly House
  6. Saramsa Garden
  7. Bakthang Waterfall

I suggest you to have a joy ride in the rope-way. A ropeway ride over the hills with all structures below you is a fantastic experience. You can get a taxi to the ropeway stand.

MG Marg – The Heart of the City

MG Marg in Gangtok is the most happening place to hang out with family and friends and it is the heart of the city. There are hundreds of hotels and restaurants in and around MG Marg. There are high end brands, liquor shops, eateries etc. on either side of the road. Who want to stay near the market place, I suggest taking hotel by MG Marg. The place looks superb from evening to night. There are sitting arrangements for tourists; the fountains with lighting add more beauty at night. Being at the place you never know when time is passed by.

Tourists mainly go for excursions and trips in day time and they return by evening. So MG Marg is the place where one can spend the evening in Gangtok. MG Marg is very popular for shopping too. Woolen cloths and jackets are highly recommended if you opt for shopping.

Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathula Pass – Day Trip from Gangtok

I suggest spending one day in Gangtok to visit Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathula Pass. This is a day trip from Gangtok and these are must visit places from Gangtok. These three destinations remain inaccessible from late January to March because the places receive heavy snowfall. Roads get blocked by snowfall and the road becomes risky for visitors. If you are visiting these places in December and early January, make an alternative plan too in case the road remains closed for a sudden snowfall and road block. Actually weather on hills at such heights can not be predicted. Nathula Pass remains closed for visitors on Monday and Tuesday, so make your plan accordingly. One must have permit to visit Nathula Pass. 2 passport size photographs and identity proofs are required to obtain permits. I do not suggest you to go for obtaining permits rather your tour manager or hotel manager can arrange permit. The hotel manager or the tour operator can arrange for shared vehicles. Exclusive vehicles are readily available.

North Sikkim Package Tour From Gangtok

There are 2 types of package tours to north Sikkim from Gangtok, i.e. 1 night – 2 days and 2 nights – 3 days tour. If one wishes to explore all the places of interest in north Sikkim, the second trip, i.e. 2 nights – 3 days trip is suggested to all travelers in Gangtok. The itinerary for north Sikkim trip is as follows:

Day 1: Transfer to Lachen, check in hotel, O/N stay at Lachen

Day 2: Excursion to Chopta Valley and Gurudongmar Lake, transfer to Lachung, O/N stay at Lachung

Day 3: Excursion to Yumthang Valley and Zero Point, transfer to Gangtok

A place named Katao can be made on the day when you visit Gurudongmar Lake but for this the driver of the vehicle should be paid some extra money. Apart from this there should not be any restrictions from Army. Katao is not included in north Sikkim package but on request the driver can manage it if accessible.

Gangtok To Pelling

Pelling is another beautiful tourist destination in west Sikkim. It is a separate stay and the best way to visit Peling is via Namchi. If you take this route, you can sightseeing the places of interest en-route. The tourist destinations on this route from Gangtok to Pelling via Namchi are Temi tea garden, Samdruptse and Char Dham. These are must visit destinations though many tourists do not takes this route. It is hard to get shared vehicles in this route though the tour operator or hotel manager can arrange one. An exclusive vehicle is readily available from Gangtok.

  1. I wish to visit Sikkim in april from 5th-14th. I will most pobably be visiting sikkim only once. So can you suggest if I should take 9N10D gangtok, lachen lachung pelling darjeeling tour or old silk route tour? I will prefer a snow view if at all it’s still there till april.
Also IF i wish to visit on my own without a travel agent how can I book cab for the entire trip?

    1. Hi Sweta,

If you feel that you won’t visit Sikkim second time, I suggest you to take good numbers of days to cover all places of interest. Darjeeling is in West Bengal and Sikkim is a separate state. Sikkim is a small state but the beauty is scattered to many regions there. April is the best time to visit Sikkim because this is the time when Rhododendrons blossom in east and north Sikkim. The following itinerary would help you to explore all parts of it.

Day 1: Reach NJP/Siliguri, transfer to Lingtam in east Sikkim (Lingtam is the gateway to Silk route), stroll around, O/N stay at Lingtam
Day 2: Day excursion to Aritar lake, view point and return to Hotel, O/N stay at Lingtam
Day 3: Check-out and transfer to Gangtok via Silk route, sightseeing on the way, check-in hotel, O/N stay at Gangtok
Day 4: Full day Gangtok sightseeing, stroll on MG Marg in evening, O/N stay at Gangtok
Day 5: Transfer to Lachen, O/N stay at Lachen
Day 6: Day trip to Thangu, Chopta Valley and Gurudongmar Lake, transfer to Lachung, O/N stay at Lachung
Day 7: Day visit to Yumthang Valley and Zero Point, after lunch transfer to Gangtok, O/N stay at Gangtok
Day 8: Visit Ranka Monastery and Enchey monastery, enjoy rope-way ride, stroll on MG Marg in evening, O/N stay at Gangtok
Day 9: Transfer to Pelling via Namchi, Samdruptse, Char Dham, Temi Tea Garden, check-in hotel, O/N stay in Pelling
Day 10: Full day sightseeing, O/N stay in Pelling
Day 11: Check-out, transfer to Darjeeling, spend time in Mal area and Chowrasta, O/N stay in Darjeeling
Day 12: Visit Tiger Hill and Batasia Loop early in the morning and after you return to hotel have your breakfast and go for a joy ride in Toy train from Darjeeling to Ghoom station, visit Ghoom Monastery, get back to hotel, O/N stay in Darjeeling
Day 13: Visit Peace Pagoda, HMI, enjoy rope-way over the tea gardens, O/N stay at Darjeeling
      Day 14: Check-out and transfer to Siliguri/NJP

If you have more days in hand, you can visit Richenpong, Versey etc. in Sikkim too.
Lachen, Lachung and places of interest from there, all are located in north Sikkim. One has to go with package trips to these places with an authorised operator to Sikkim tourism. The hotel manager in Gangtok will help you in this regard or you can talk to any agencies there in Gangtok.

There is only one hotel in Lingtam and rest are house stays which are not worth. You have to book this hotel in advance. On way to Gangtok from Lingtam, there are places of interest like Zuluk, Nathang Valley etc. If you have more time, you can stay in any of those places. There are no hotels in any of these places in east Sikkim, all are house stays. You need special permission to enter east region. The hotel owner in Lingtam can help you in this regard. He arranges my permits too when I visit. I stay in this hotel only. The owner has got a hotel in Gangtok too which is located at a superb location. I stay there too.

There is no need to book any vehicle for the entire trip, you would get car ready at all points. You are not supposed to make this trip with any travel agent or operator. You can easily make it on your own.

I can help you with all necessary information. Drop me a mail at “uvreachedavi@gmail.com” if you have any other query or any doubt in mind. I can share the contacts of hotel with you if needed. Just let me know.

      Cheers…!

  2. We wish to visit North Bengal during May,2014. Which is the best spot to see rhododendrons during this time?

    1. Hi Sushmita,

Thanks for visiting TravelDias.com. Hope you enjoyed your stay on my blog.

North Sikkim and east Sikkim are the two regions which are blossomed with Rhododendrons from April to May and extends to early June too. In north Sikkim, Rhododendrons are found on the stretch from Lachung to Yumthang Valley, Thangu to Chopta Valley and Thangu to Gurudongmar Lake. In east Sikkim Rhododendrons are found along the entire stretch from Lingtam to Old Baba Mandir on silk route. I suggest you to cover both east Sikkim and north Sikkim if you really want to view colors of Rhododendrons.

Please do mail me for any other query at “uvreachedavi@gmail.com” with reference to this mail. I will surely revert back.

  3. Hello Abhijit!

    I have the following queries:-
    1. What is the cost of a booked vehicle for a tsomgo, nathula from gangtok and back during last week of april?
    2. Is it possible to cover Namchi(Char Dham) ,Temi tea garden from Gangtok and come back same day? I have also heard that there are helicopter rides available from Gangtok to Namchi. So is it possible to from Gangtok to Namchi by air and come back again to Gangtok by car. What would be the approx cost for the same?

    1. Hi Abhinav,

Thanks for visiting TravelDias. Hope you enjoyed your stay.

Here are the answers to your queries:
      1. It will be Rs 3,000-3,500 approx. to Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir. If you include Nathula Pass then it would be Rs 7,000 approx. Nathula is on the same way.

      2. Yes, you can visit Namchi on a day trip. You can go, visit all places and then come back to Gangtok. No helicopter is available presently. A vehicle will take Rs 3,500 approx. for a round trip.

    1. @halebid: Thanks for the appreciation. Yes, I have checked your mail and replied there. You can have a check and let me know if you require any more information. Please reply in the same thread.

  6. I wish to visit Sikkim in November-December 2014 from 29th-5th. I will most pobably be visiting sikkim only once. So can you suggest if I should take 5N6D gangtok, lachen lachung tour or old silk route tour?
Also IF i wish to visit on my own without a travel agent how can I book cab for the entire trip? December hotel fair & trip cost.

    1. Hi Barun,

If you have plan to visit Sikkim only once then I suggest you to spend as many nights as possible. Sikkim is one of the most beautiful states in India. The scenic view is just amazing. 2 nights – 3 days is must for north Sikkim. North Sikkim is visited from Gangtok. It is suggested to spend one or two days at Gangtok before you set of for north Sikkim to acclimatize with height/altitude. The day you reach Gangtok, you have yo stay there and then when you return from north Sikkim, you will have to spend the night at Gangtok only.

If you have time, do not miss east Sikkim. The journey through Silk route will be a lifetime experience. You can surely visit on your own. You won’t require any travel agent. It is better if you hire a vehicle from point to point. Vehicles are readily available. Hiring a vehicle for the entire trip is just waste of money. December is not that much of a peak season but there will be tourist who want to enjoy the chilling weather.

If you need details, travel plan or any further information, do mail me at “uvreachedavi@gmail.com”. I will surely revert back.

  7. Hey Abhijit,

    Great Blog.
    I will be in Gangtok for 2D3N ( 15,16,17 Oct, 2014).
I want to go for Nathula, and Changu lake one day. Can you suggest other activities during the day and also evening?

    Thanks,

    1. Hi Shrinivas,

I heartily apologize that I could not reply in this regard because I was out of city and I didn’t have internet access there. Hope you had great time in Sikkim. Please do let me know if you make a trip in future, I will surely help. All the best and keep traveling. It is the best way to be happy and satisfied in life.

  8. Hi,

We are travelling as a couple & are planning for a trip around April’15 first week. We will be staying more in Gangtok. Please suggest travel itinerary.

    Thanks,
    Anuj

    1. Hi Anuj,

I can surely suggest an itinerary to you. Let me know exact number of night halts and if you have any preference for any place in Sikkim. I will suggest accordingly. Drop me a mail at “uvreachedavi@gmail.com” with all details.

  9. hello sir,
we are plnning to visit sikkim betwwen 6th to 10th march 2015. plz suggest our itinerary during the days. can we visit yumthung valley during this tour?

    1. Hi Himashri,

I don’t think you make it to all places in north Sikkim that time because in early March, some places remain blocked because of heavy snowfall. If road remains clear there is no issue to visit. So you have to keep information. There is no need to book the north Sikkim pacakge or trip in advance. If you see that the road is clear, you can manage everything or book the north Sikkim package after reaching Gangtok. I can not suggest you any trip plan unless I know what are the places you want to visit. I also need to know the exact number of night stays there so that I can suggest you accordingly. Drop me a mail at “uvreachedavi@gmail.com” with all details, I will surely revert back.

    Thanks
    Joydeep Majumdar

    1. Hi Joydeep,

Your plan looks okay for young and middle aged people but the 60 year lady may face some issues with such a hectic journey. The journey is hectic and along with that there may be high altitude issues with the lady. I would suggest you if you go with this plan, make sure the lady is physically fit and if you need consult with a doctor. The Gurudongmar Lake is located at a very high altitude. North Sikkim region is very high and the journey is not smooth too. The itinerary looks fine if there is no issue with the lady.

  12. Hey Abhijit,

    Nice and helpful Blog.

I will be in Gangtok for 2N3D from April 09 with spouse. Would you please help to make or suggest an itinerary? I mean where to visit as well as staying etc.
I also sent an email to you.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Iftekhar,

Wish I could help you but unfortunately you have already set off for the trip and I couldn’t reply earlier as I was out of city without internet access. Next time whenever you make a tour plan and need any assistance, just drop me a mail or call me (number provided on FB page) and I can surely help you out.

  13. I am planning to travel to NorthBengal and Esat sikkim during mid may. The tour members include 4 Senior Citizens(all 65+) , 2 children ( 7 & 12 yrs) besides me and my wife. I am planning to cover NJP->Sillerey Gaon/Pedong, Aritar, Zuluk, Gnathang, Gangtok->NJP. I am reaching NJP on Sunday and catching the train back to Kolkata on Sunday night. So I have 8 days to spare in total. I have few questions

    1. How id the road condition in this route?
2.Is it safe (from a health perspective) to visit this place as I am travelling with Senior Citizens?
    3. Which places should we stay along this route?
4.Can you pls suggest a non hectic tour plan?

    Thanks in advance
    Kaustuv

    1. Hi Kaustuv,

As you have senior citizens in the group I would suggest you to skip Gnathang valley and stay at Padamchen which would be favorable for the seniors and less people visit this destination. It would be less chaotic too. You can stay at Sillery Gaon, Padamchen and Aritar. I suggest you to make a trip which will have less journey but the over nights stays have to be memorable. Please drop me a mail at “uvreachedavi@gmail.com” in reference to this conversation. I would surely help you out with framing the plan and possible expenses.

  14. Hi Abhijit,

Kindly help us to prepare the itenary for Gangtok and nearby places with fare cost of taxis.

    Here are the details

    10th Jan’16 – > Departure from bagdogra at 02:30 PM
No of Pax – 2 (Adults)

Also please let me know how will be climate condition during Jan.

    Regards,
    Bhavesh Shah

  15. Hi Abhijit,

I am actually confused regarding my trip to gangtok and i hope you can help me on this plz.

I am reaching Darjeeling on 2nd oct morning and planning to cover it in one day. After that i m planning to go to gangtok on 2nd Oct night itself and cover most of the places there till 3rd Oct night but the problem is that i have only one day to cover nathula paas, gangtok and rest of the nearby places.

It will be of great help if you can suggest how can i cover max places in one day.

    1. If you have only 1 day for Darjeeling, I would suggest you to skip Darjeeling and not make the trip hectic. It will be better if you focus on Gangtok only. 2 days are so less to cover Gangtok and nearby places.

  16. Hi Abhijit,

  19. Hi,
Please give me a plan for sikim tour.. Except north sikim portion.
    Including gantok-pelling-rabangla.

    1. Hi,

I can’t suggest any tour itinerary with knowing the number of days for your trip. What I have understood is you don’t want to visit north Sikkim, Gangtok, Pelling and Ravangla. Let me know if I am wrong. Share your feedback to my mail-id “uvreachedavi@gmail.com” and I will suggest all possible tour plans.

  20. Hello Abhijit,

  21. Hi, I’m planning my honeymoon in Apr end and want your suggestions. Planned dates are 23rd Apr to 29th Apr (6N and 7Days), please suggest the places to visit and any tailor made plans available so that I can rely for hotel, car bookings

    1. Hi Abhijit, is it advisable to get a transport vehicle on the spot for visiting Pelling or Lachung or other places? I have done hotel booking however I have not taken any car or transport facility

      1. You can book vehicles after you reach there but keep your hotel manager informed about your plans. North Sikkim (Lachen, Lachung) travel needs per mit for tourists and the vehicle, so inform your hotel desk. You can mail me at “uvreachedavi@gmail.com” for further details.

  22. Hi Abhijit,

Thanks a lot for the detailed information on Sikkim. I urgently need your help. I am travelling to Gangtok and North Sikkim from 7th April to 13th April, 2016. I am planning to do Changu lake, Nathula excursion then 2 night 3 days gurudongmar and yumthang excursion and then gangtok sightseeing before returning back.

I am little tight on budget and wanted to see if I can complete the package in shared basis. I have got two hotels in gangtok who are ready to provide me the Nathula and N. Sikkim trip in shared vehicle. However they are not disclosing the Lachen/Lachung hotel names beforehand(indicating they are very basic hotels), they don’t allow upgrading the room or choosing another hotel in N. Sikkim even if I am ready to give the extra cost and also don’t provide any option to book an extra seat in the vehicle for added comfort. I couldn’t get hold of any travel agent who can provide me shared trip to nathula and north sikkim. Every travel agent is telling that they only provide private vehicle hotel package.

As we are only two persons travelling there, booking an exclusive vehicle is next to impossible considering the budget. Do you know any hotel or travel agent who can give me the best possible Nathula and N. Sikkim trip in sharing basis. I am going nathula on 8th April and from 9 – 11 I am travelling N. Sikkim. I just want decent clean rooms with fair service in decent hotels in N. Sikkim, nothing fancy.

  23. We reached at Gangtok on 4th May and stay at Gangtok from 4th May to 7th May. Plz suggest how to cover maximum places on these days or which places we will visit short time period.

    1. Hi,

From 4th to 7th May, it makes 3 nights – 4 days. Please let me know if I am wrong. As you have only 3 nights in hand, you can spend all these 3 nights in Gangtok only. You can visit the Ranka Monastery the day you reach Gangtok, you can cover the spot of Paragliding on way to Ranka monastery. If you want you can go for this adventurous sports too. The next day you can go for a full day sightseeing covering all points around Gangtok and enjoy rope-way ride too. On the 3rd day you can go for a day trip to Tsomgo Lake (Changu lake), New Baba Mandir and Nathula Pass (if you get permission). On 4th day you can check-out and transfer to NJP/Bagdogra.

You can mail me at “uvreachedavi@gmail.com” for further information.

  24. Hi Abhijit,

You have maintained a great travel blog. Can you please help me out.
I plan to visit gangtok from 23rd (late evening) to 28th May. As its my honeymoon i don’t want a tiring full day travel in sight seeing but still want to see beautiful spots and experiences. I need your help to figure out what all places should i cover and where should i plan to stay (should it be near MG road or some outer location with good scenery). Also will it be good idea to book a package online or just book flight and book local taxis from gangtok once we arrive.

    Thanks in advance,
    Sandeep

    1. Hi,

You can but it is absolutely absurd to do the same because you can make a to and fro journey to Pelling from Gangtok but you will not be able to cover places of interest in Pelling and beyond that it will be very tiresome and hectic. It is approx. 4 to 4.5 hours from Gangtok to Pelling. It needs separate stays for Pelling. 2 nights stay is good to cover all places of interest in Pelling.

  25. Hello Abhijit,

This is blog is very useful and helpful. I am planning to visit the place in end of October and November. To be precise it will be 4N/5D trip. I know the places that I want to visit by going through your blog and from other research. However, still need to know how to go about it. Where I should stay, how to book trips when in Gangtok etc. As I will be a solo traveler. Any suggestion is welcome.

    Thanks

    1. Considering you are a solo traveler, you can visit Gangtok only and stay all 4 nights in Gangtok. There are shared vehicles between NJP/Siliguri and Gangtok. I have shared a tentative plan, please check your inbox.

  26. Hello sir,
Me , my husband and six yr old son are about to visit Gangtok in Oct 9 to 14. I am showing you my itinerary . can u suggest that it is OK or I should change it?
    9th reach Gangtok
    10th way to lachung
11th yumthang n back to Gangtok
    12th Gangtok sightseeing
13th clearly morning change lake to nathula
From nathula to rongli (silk route)
    Stay at rongli
    14th rongli to njp

    1. The plan is okay but You can stay at Padamchen or Reshikhola or Mankhim rather than staying at Rongli. Rongli is just a market place which is chaotic without any scenic view.

  27. Hi abhjit ji.,

    1. North Sikkim needs minimum 2 nights – 3 days. You can spend 2 nights in Gangtok and 2 nights in north Sikkim. Approx. budget can be Rs 15,000 (Transportation in shared cars).

  29. Hi abhijit,
    Very nice blog.
I want to book a honeymoon package in march. Very confused with hotel booking. Kindly tell me best hotel with affordable price around 2-3k.whether i need to book by a travel planner or can i book only hotels.??

  30. Hi Abhijit,
    Thanks for the helpful blog.
We are planning to visit the place in end of March. To be precise it will be 3N/4D trip. Our team shall consist of 5 adults & 3 children.
Please help us preparing the itinerary for our trip and a tentative estimate of the budget for the trip.
    Thanking you

    1. You can make Gangtok as your base and cover all places in and around Gangtok. 3 nights are good to cover all places in Gangtok. Standard rooms should cost around Rs 1,500 per day and deluxe rooms should cost you Rs 2,500 per day. You will need a large car like Sumo, Bolero, Max, etc. to travel as you are 8 heads including children. Please check your mail for a rough estimate.

  31. Hi I want to plan an adventure trip to gangok – darjelling lachung lachen may be some more if you can suggest but I want all activities or places where I can do rafting may be gliding snow grinding skiing a complete Itenary for the places that we can go and plan an adventurous trip would help….the dates are 23rd march to 30th march …lemme know detaled itenary with price included for all activities or hotels and any transfer in vehicles…. I m flying from Mumbai to bagdogra

    1. You can do Paragliding near Gangtok. You will need a full day for this. You can visit Ranka Monastery and the Paragliding point on a day.

You can do river rafting near Rongpo while returning back to airport or NJP station. You can enjoy rafting on way back to station/airport.

You can enjoy fishing, camping and tenting at Reshikhola along Silk Route in east Sikkim.
You can enjoy snow and freezing temperature at Gurudongmar Lake in north Sikkim and at Nathang Valley in east Sikkim along Silk Route.
Katao is located in north Sikkim and it is a prohibited place. Army hardly provides permission to visit this place. So don’t count in this place. You can speak to your driver on spot if he can manage to take you there.
You can’t cover so many places in such short period. I feel you should skip and avid Darjeeling and focus on Sikkim only. I need exact number of nights you have in hand for the trip excluding onward and return journeys to plan a trip for you. I need the number of nights you can stay there.

  32. Hi! I want to reach namchi after visitng tsongmo lake, babamandir and nathula. Is it possible to do it in a day or I have to take .night stay somewhere.

      1. I am planning to do babamandir n all n proceed towards namchi. Night stay here. Early morning do ñamchi sightseen n same day transfer to njp

        1. Please do not send separate mails or comments. It is very hard to keep a track of all info. it would be great if you can compile all your query in a mail and send across to me. I would revert back for sure. We can then continue communicating in the same mail. You can mail me at “uvreachedavi@gmail.com”

  37. Hi Abhijit,

My husband and I are planning to visit Sikkim in mid December this year. We both like to stay at places and enjoy the nature rather than hopping from here to there. We both like bird watching. though not only bird watching. The trip would be of approx 9 days. Can you suggest us good places in Sikkim? reading different sites and suggestions, i find it confusing to plan our tour.

    1. Hello Dear,

Couldn’t reply earlier as I was busy with some stuff. Please let me know if you are still looking for any information. I would love to help you with all details and information.

  38. Hi,

You blog is very informative and helpful.
I was wondering if you could help me with these queries.

We are planning a trip to Darjeeling and few places in Sikkim ( Nathang Valley, Gangtok, Zulu, Nathula Pass)
    from 22-28th Feb.

    Things I want to see:
    1. Tea gardens
    2. Enjoy and play with snow.

Enjoying snow is the reason I am planning to visit this Nathang valley, Zulu or Nathula pass. But after reading your blog and also few other blogs It seem chances are that all these places in Sikkim (like Nathang Valley, Gangtok, Zulu, Nathula Pass) would probably be closed during that time.

Query 1: So could you suggest me any alternative places in Sikkim during that time where we can go from Gangtok to enjoy snow and
that would most probably be open ?

Query: 2: I was thinking to make my base Darjeeling and Gangtok to visit all these places as these two places have nice hotels. I was thinking for 3 days in Darjeeling and 3 days in Gangtok. Does this plan seem ok ?

Query 3: I would be travelling with 22 months infant with me so would it be ok If I travel to these places with infant?

    Thanks in advance

  39. I am planning a trip to sikim. Reaching siliguri on 15th December and have to return to siliguri on 21st December. Whar will be the most suitable route to visit for me?? Is it possible to cover gangtok, silk route & lachung in those days?? How much will be the cost per person??

  42. Dear Abhijit,
Your blog is really very informative. I need your help to plan a trip to North Sikkim. I’ll reach NJP on 16/03/2018 morning and will leave NJP on 20/03/2018 evening. Please let me know whether Gurudongmar can be visited during that time? If yes how to book can and hotel there? Do you have any contact number there? We are two people in the trip. Please help.

      Have a nice day. Cheers!

  43. Hi Abhijit!

I am planning on going on a solo trip around April end this year.

Mostly aiming for Gangtok and Pelling and places around. . as i have limited time on hand, 5 nights max. So i guess Darjeeling will not be possible.

Can you please advise me on the places which are must visit and also decent and cheap hotel recommendations if any since i’ll be alone 😛 . .

    1. I would like to know if you are planning for 4 nights – 5 days or 5 nights – 6 days. It is not clear to me. You would need at least 5 nights excluding journey to cover Gangtok, Zero Point (North Sikkim), Tsomgo Lake (Changu). You would need another 2 nights for Pelling. It’s better you call me over the phone. I can share all other details if you need. You can call me any day on my mobile after 9.30 pm.

    1. Your trip plan should be:
3 nights in Gangtok and 2 nights in north Sikkim (1 night each in Lachen and Lachung). When do you plan to travel? Please share your detail Gangtok and north Sikkim tour plan along with dates, number of persons, etc.

Cost Require for Hotel & Car for Every Day & Every trip individually..

    1. Hello Avijit! Thanks for writing to me. Are you aware that I am not a travel agent or tour operator? Your tone of writing to me doesn’t suggest that. I can help you with all information you need. If you have 7 nights-8 days in hand, you can spend 2 nights-3 days in covering north Sikkim and rest you can spare covering Gangtok and Pelling. It can be 3 nights in Gnagtok, 2 nights in north Sikkim and 2 nights in Pelling.
It should cost you approx. 20K to 25K in total for 6 of you for 2 nights-3 days trip to North Sikkim including food, transport, permit, stay and sightseeing. It will cost you 25K to 30K is you avail luxury cars like Innova.
In Gangtok a descent room should cost you Rs 2,000-2,500 per room per day including breakfast and dinner or Rs 1,000 per head per day including breakfast and dinner. On an average the cost of Food per person in Gangtok and Pelling should be Rs 600-700 per head per day.
Transport cost should be Rs 3,500 on average per day.

We can discuss further in detail. If needed, you can call me on 9831540384. I would love to help you.

  53. Hi,

I am travelling to Gangtok in Mid-Jan and have in total 3 days in Gangtok. Please suggest a good trip within 3-4k budget(as hotel already booked) – Must include Changu lake. Apart from that kindly suggest more places within budget.

    Thanks.

    1. Hello Ashish,

You can cover Gangtok local sightseeing which would take a full day. During your visit to Gangtok, there is negligible chances of visiting Nathula pass because the route will remain covered with snow and you will not be given permit.

  54. HI Abhijit Gupta

    1. If you have 10 nights in hand, you should spend 2 nights in Darjeeling, 2 nights in Pelling, 4 nights in Gangtok and 2 nights in north Sikkim (Lachen, Lachung).
You can cover Darjeeling first which is in West Bengal and then travel to Sikkim covering above mentioned places of interest.
