The first question while booking our stay in a hotel comes in is that where to take the hotel or which is the best place to stay in Gangtok. This is really a common question among all travelers to Gangtok town in Sikkim. I receive so many queries on this topic every month and so I have decided to come up with this post which clarifies everything.
Gangtok is a very beautiful town on hills and I can say that it is one of the most well maintained and designed hill towns in India. Gangtok is the most visited tourist destination in Sikkim. The journey from NJP to Gangtok by road along the river Teesta is fabulous. Most of the tourist places in Sikkim can be visited from Gangtok. Huge number of tourists visits the place all through out the year and all of them think of where to stay in Gangtok while making the Gangtok tour plan. So let me now talk about the places to spend nights in Gangtok town.
MG Marg and Development Area are two most favorite and popular places to stay in Gangtok town. Both the places have so many hotels and restaurants with beautiful scenic beauty all around which makes a perfect stay but both the places have its own positive points. Let me cover the places one by one with their positive points and then we can compare.
MG Marg ā A Market Place in Gangtok
MG Marg area is the most happening place in Gangtok. MG Marg is the name of a street. It is the main market place of Gangtok and the heart of the town.
There are hundreds of hotels, multi cuisine restaurants, eateries, shops, markets etc. in and around MG Marg. The street is always busy with locals, travelers from other parts of Sikkim and tourists.
If you want to stay near the market place or a happening place then MG Marg area would be the best place to take your hotel and spend the nights in Gangtok.
Development Area in Gangtok
Development Area is around half an hour walk from the MG Marg area along the national high way 31A. A cab takes few minutes from MG Marg to Development Area or vice versa.
Development Area is away from the chaos that you find in MG Marg. Development Area in Gangtok is serene and a tranquil place with a breath taking scenic view all around. The natural beauty all around is just awesome. There is nothing happening, so if you want a happening place, Development Area is not the place to stay in but if you are a nature lover, it is the best place to stay in Gangtok. The view of the sleeping giant ā Mt. Kanchenjungha from Development Area with no chaos anywhere but complete peace is really appreciable and enjoyable.
The Gangtok city looks superb at night from Development Area. You can have an aerial view of the city on the hills. So if you love and prefer serenity and natural beauty to artificial things, I would always suggest you to stay at Development Area in Gangtok.
I personally prefer to stay at Development Area because I love serene places and I love to stay close to the nature and away from chaos. Each time I visit Gangtok I stay at Development Area because I love the scenic beauty there all around.

The trip plan can be like this:
Day 1: Reach Gangtok, stroll around in MG Marg in evening, O/N stay
Day 2: Full day Gangtok city sightseeing, O/N stay
Day 3: Day trip to Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathula Pass
Note: Make sure Day 3 is not a Monday or Tuesday because Nathula Pass is closed on these 2 days.
When you ask for a hotel in Development Area, I will surely share the details of the hotels I stay in and I have the personal experience. P.S i knw one hotel -name is like hotel shibam something. but tarif is hight for standard room.
I don’t stay around MG Marg because I like to stay in a calm place away from chaos. Development Area is the best place and it is 10 min drive from MG Marg. You can stay at Shivam Resort there which is one of the best budget hotels I have found in Gangtok though there are hundreds of more hotels/resorts.

i will be traveling to Gangtok on 30th of may and will be staying there for 3 days since i will also be wanting to spend a couple of days in Darjeeling and around,its a family trip with parents and relatives so no hardcore adventure or trekking but as i came across through my search i found north sikkim around Kanchenjunga, yumsemdong, gurudongmar lake extremely attractive so i would want you to suggest me how should i go about planning this in the minimum time that i have & cover all thee possible beautiful locations in the north too.along with this since i have never travelled to the north east kindly suggest me where should i stay in where i can get minimal tariffs with the GOOD SCENIC VIEW through windows and balconies with ofcourse a decent infrastructure (it doesnt have to be great or even good but if i look out the window i should forget the world! i hope u get my point) and should also be close to the market place which i suppose is mg marg, ive looked up a few places in deorali and near the dc court but i am not too sure about their availability and distance from the market place and other similar places where food and other stuff is available, and also guide me the same if you can about darjeeling ,and sir kindly let me also know in gangtok and darjeeling where we can find tasty food and by that i mean north is too bad with its oil and taste so if the cuisine is similar if not exactly like mumbai delhi or punjab it will still be a blessing cause food is an extremely major problem with my family and me while travelling north and so i assume will be in the north east as the culture is totally different and lastly sir whatever points you would like to suggest for me to keep in mind while travelling around sikkim and darjeeling i will be utmost grateful to you sir if you can help me sort out with all these bunch of queries though i understand as i am keying this it might be so much of a torture to you! thanking you and waiting for your kind reply asap.

North Sikkim is really beautiful. North Sikkim needs a minimum of 2 nights – 3 days. North Sikkim trip is done on package system. As you are less in number visiting with your parents, you will have to go for shared trip to make the trip economic. If you reserve a vehicle for the 2 nights – 3 days trip it will be expensive. There won’t be much choice for food because it is remote area and there are no restaurants or other developments. You will have to rely on what you get at your resort/hotel.
In Gangtok there are good options for food. I feel you should skip Darjeeling this time and focus on Sikkim only. I can share a detailed itinerary only when you let me know what places you want to cover and how many exact number of days you have in hand.

For your information, Gangtok never receive snowfall and Paragliding facility is not available at Nathula Pass. Nathula is a border between India and China, restricted place. Nathula is closed on Monday and Tuesday as per updated information to me.

I don’t suggest you 5 nights in Gangtok, rather you can spend 3 nights in Gangtok and 2 nights in east Sikkim. When you have 5 nights in hand, cover the famous Silk route. You can make the following trip plan:
NJP/Siliguri >> Mankhim >> Padamchen >> Gangtok >> NJP/Siliguri
In east Sikkim shared taxis are not available, you will have to reserve a vehicle for all transfers.
If your budget is constraint, you can focus on Gangtok and Pelling and the trip plan can be 3 nights in Gangtok + 2 nights in Pelling. Both these places are connected with shared taxis and Siliguri/NJP is connected with shared taxis too with these 2 places.

Development Area is 35-40 minutes away from MG Marg if you take a walk, it takes 8-10 minutes by car. You can stay at Development Area or take a hotel near MG Marg at any lane. Yes, you must inform the hotel desk or any local agent about your trip plan to Nathula Pass. Permit for Nathula Pass is given via authorized agencies only. There is no surety of Nathula permit, it is on he discretion of Indian Army that allows visitors there. If you don’t get Nathula Pass permit, you can visit Tsomgo Lake (Changu lake) and New Baba Mandir which is on the same route. Bullets are not available, rather I must say that bikes are not available on rent. A biker must carry his own bike to get permission. Permission is given from Gangtok office.

28-31 will be in Sikkim
1st oct. ā return train from NJP to Kol.

how do you rate Denzong Shangrila Gangtok in the Development area?I am planning to book it.The other alternative is Maple Resort near Palzor Stadium.
My wife and adult son is traveling for a short family vacation.We love walking in natural surroundings and do not want to stay in a crowded and busy place.All three of us are nature lovers.
We plan to base ourselves in Gangtok and go for day trips.
Two of these are more or less finalized;ie. Tsango Lake and Baba Mandir on day 2 and Rabalanga and Temi tea estate on day 3.
On day 4 ,the last day we are in Gangtok ,I really do not know what to do.We are not at all interested in visiting the local sight seeing places consisting of Stupas ,monasteries ,temples and view points. Instead do you suggest Rumtek and Banjhokri waterfall will be Ok ? Or we could go for some adventure sports like river rafting or just camping near the Teesta for Lunch. Are there any adventure sports places near Gangtok?

You must visit Rumtek. You can enjoy river rafting while coming back from Gangtok. It is done near Rangpo in Teesta river.
